The Platform’s comparability comes from a methodology that is difficult to replicate. Our infrastructure assessments take the perspective of one of the largest operating recyclers in the world, with primary data collection across more than 50 markets, and your access includes direct support from the team behind it.
Most international recycling datasets treat formal infrastructure as the only signal. The result: developed markets with extensive formal collection appear to recycle more than emerging markets with extensive informal recovery, even when the share of material actually returning to the value chain is comparable or higher. The Platform corrects for this by including informal-sector activity in every market’s maturity assessment, alongside formal collection, sorting and reprocessing.
The data also takes the perspective of an operating recycler rather than a desk-bound consultancy. What matters in the ranking: is the material targeted for collection, sorted into a high quality stream, reprocessed into a usable secondary stream, and absorbed by end markets?
That is why aluminium cans earn the highest ranking in both Brazil and Germany, even though the path from collection to recycling differs tremendously between the two.
